Step 1) Tell us your move basics (no sensitive info)
Start here. Share where you’re moving from and to (ZIP or city/state), the type of move (local or long-distance/interstate), and an approximate move date.
You’ll also tell us what kind of home you have (for example, 1–2 bedroom, 3–4 bedroom) or roughly how much you’re moving. If you prefer a certain language for communication, note that too.
MoveLantern is a free matching + information service. We don’t collect immigration documents, government ID numbers, or payment card details.
Step 2) Get matched with licensed, vetted movers (you choose)
Once you share the basics, MoveLantern matches you with movers that are appropriate for your route and needs.
If your move crosses state lines, the mover must be registered with the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) and have a USDOT number. We’ll help you compare options, but you should still verify a mover’s license/registration before you hire them.
You’ll decide who to contact and which mover (if any) you want to use. There’s no pressure and no cost to you.
Step 3) Understand estimates: binding vs non-binding vs not-to-exceed
A written estimate is the key step for staying in control of cost. Before a mover sends a final bill, ask what kind of estimate you’re getting.
Here’s the plain-language difference:
- Non-binding estimate: a good-faith guess. The price can change after the mover reviews your shipment details.
- Binding estimate: the mover locks in a price in writing before the move.
- Not-to-exceed / guaranteed-not-to-exceed: the most you should pay. It’s designed to protect you from going above that number.
Whatever you choose, make sure you get it in writing—never only by text or verbally.
Step 4) Plan your cost range (and know what changes price)
Moving costs vary a lot. The real price depends on how much you’re moving, how far you’re going, the season, packing needs, stairs/elevators, parking access, and how busy movers are.
Typical planning ranges (varies a lot, get it in writing):
- Local 1–2 bedroom: roughly $400–$1,500
- Local 3–4 bedroom: roughly $1,000–$3,500
- Long-distance/interstate: roughly $2,000–$8,000+ depending on weight and distance
- Professional packing: roughly $300–$2,000+ (often more for heavier/protected packing)
- Specialty items (like a piano): often $200–$800+ on top
Tip: If one mover’s estimate seems far below the rest, ask why. Compare the written details: what’s included, what the mover is counting, and how they value/handle your belongings.
Step 5) Choose a mover with confidence (and avoid common scams)
When you compare movers, focus on clear communication, a written estimate, and official credentials.
Watch for red flags:
- No written estimate, only a verbal price.
- Very low “bait” quotes that rise once they arrive.
- Large cash deposits or pressure to pay before the estimate is finalized.
- The “hostage load” scenario—refusing to deliver unless you pay more without a written agreement.
- Movers that can’t explain what you’re signing.
Before you hire, verify the mover’s USDOT number and FMCSA registration if the move is interstate. You can also ask what paperwork you’ll receive—your contract/bill of lading (the move contract and receipt for your shipment) and the stated level of liability/coverage. (Valuation is not the same thing as insurance.)
A real-life example (anonymized): how a calm plan becomes a smooth move
Someone relocating for work planned their move several weeks ahead. They shared the from/to cities and their approximate home size, and they requested communication in their preferred language.
MoveLantern matched them with licensed movers for their route. They reached out to a few options and asked for written estimates, including whether the estimate was binding or non-binding.
They also compared what each estimate included—especially packing and any specialty handling. When they noticed one estimate was much lower, they asked for the written breakdown and learned it didn’t include several expected services.
In the end, they chose the mover that gave clear paperwork and a written estimate they understood. The result wasn’t “perfect pricing”—it was a clear, documented plan, and that’s what reduces surprises.
MoveLantern is a free way to share your move details, get matched with licensed movers, compare written estimates, and choose who to hire—without pressure or hidden steps.
