How to reach MoveLantern
Tell us what you’re moving and when, and we’ll point you to the right next step. MoveLantern is a free matching service, not a moving company—so we won’t move your items or replace a written estimate from a licensed mover.
If you prefer another language, mention it. Matching and guidance are often easier when you can communicate comfortably.
For the fastest help, include:
- Your current location (city + state, or ZIP)
- Your destination (city + state, or ZIP)
- Approximate move date (or a date range)
- How big the move is (studio/1BR/2BR/3–4BR or “roughly how many rooms”)
- Local, long-distance, or interstate (state-to-state)
- Any special considerations (stairs, parking issues, bulky items)
- Your preferred way to contact us (and language)
Important: Don’t send government IDs, immigration paperwork, or payment card numbers. We don’t need sensitive documents to help you plan.
What happens after you contact us
After you reach out, we’ll review your details and help you get matched with licensed movers for your route type. For long-distance or interstate moves, household-goods movers must be registered with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) and have a USDOT number.
Then you’ll receive information to compare movers and estimate options. Prices can’t be guaranteed over chat or email—your only real price is a written estimate from a licensed mover.
What you can expect:
- We’ll help identify the right type of mover (local vs. long-distance vs. interstate)
- You’ll be encouraged to verify licenses/registration yourself before you hire
- You’ll learn which estimate type to ask for (binding vs. non-binding vs. not-to-exceed)
- We’ll share practical questions to ask so you feel confident on estimate day
Before you contact us: quick check on costs (typical ranges)
Moving costs vary a lot based on weight/volume, distance, season, and how access works at both addresses. So think of these as planning ranges, not quotes.
Typical US planning estimates:
- Local moves (about 1–2 bedroom): roughly $400–$1,500
- Local moves (about 3–4 bedroom): roughly $1,000–$3,500
- Long-distance / interstate moves: roughly $2,000–$8,000+ depending on distance and weight
- Professional packing (if you want it): roughly $300–$2,000+ (depends on how much needs packing)
- Specialty items (examples like pianos): often $200–$800+ on top, depending on the item and access
If anyone offers a “too good to be true” number, insists on paying large cash deposits only, or won’t provide a written estimate, pause. We’ll help you spot red flags.
Estimate types—simple explanations you can use
When you talk to movers, you’ll see different “estimate” words. Here’s what they mean in plain terms:
- Non-binding estimate: A good-faith guess. The final price can change after the mover confirms the details.
- Binding estimate: A price the mover locks in, in writing, before the move.
- Not-to-exceed / guaranteed-not-to-exceed: The most you’ll pay, which protects you if conditions match the agreement.
One key term: bill of lading. This is the contract and receipt for your move. Before anything is scheduled, make sure you understand what’s written there—especially how price, services, and liability work.
If you’re unsure, ask us and we’ll guide you on the right questions to ask your mover.
How to avoid moving scams and “hostage load” traps
Most movers are honest. But scams happen. Use these checks before you hire:
- No written estimate, no hire: Ask for a written estimate and review it line by line.
- Verify the mover’s FMCSA registration for interstate: Household-goods movers crossing state lines must be FMCSA-registered and have a USDOT number. Verify it yourself.
- Watch the deposit: Be cautious with large cash deposits or pressure to pay quickly.
- Avoid “we’ll hold your belongings until…”: Never allow unclear pricing at pickup time.
- Keep paperwork: Save estimates, the bill of lading, and any written agreements.
If a mover refuses basic verification steps, that’s a strong sign to choose someone else.
